Information regarding scripture readings chosen for the Seasons of the Spirit resources
Seasons of the Spirit resources are based on the scripture readings from the Revised Common Lectionary. This lectionary offers two streams of reading from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) during the Season after Pentecost: the “Paired readings” stream and the “Semi-continuous readings” stream. The Seasons of the Spirit resources are based on Semi-continuous stream. For more information about the two streams of readings see the article “One Lectionary—Two Streams” in the ABOUT section of the Seasons websites (www.spiritseasons.com and www.seasonsonline.ca)

While the Seasons of the Spirit resources are based on readings from the Semi-continuous stream, we have in recent years included replacement materials for those who follow the Paired readings stream. However, in response to user feedback which indicated that few were using the replacement materials, Seasons of the Spirit chose to cease creating these materials and put its development dollar to a different use.

As much as possible, we try to choose focus passages that are common to both streams of readings. However, in order to give integrity to the Semi-continuous readings from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), there are times when we choose to focus on a series of readings from the Hebrew Scriptures to enable exploration of key stories of faith. In the Pentecost 2, 2010 season this will happen for four out of the twelve sessions. Denominations that may be affected by this include some Lutheran, Episcopal, and Anglican churches.

Alternate resources will be provided in the Library on the Seasons website for Reformation Day and All Saints Day — these resources will be posted soon.

The Seasons of the Spirit development team would appreciate receiving feedback about from our customers regarding their interest in and need for replacement materials that are based on the Paired readings. Although we are unable to commit to making changes, the information will be used as we continue to evaluate and develop our materials.
